What improvements could be made?

Once the space is freed up, potential improvements could include more outdoor dining space, new planting to support local biodiversity, improved paving and seating and public art.

    Are there any proposals?

We don’t have any formal proposals yet. We’re considering further reducing traffic on Earl Street to free up space and improve the environment, but we want to work with businesses and the community to understand their needs before we create any designs.

Will vehicles be banned from Earl Street entirely?

We will work with businesses and the community to decide how further traffic restrictions will work. It is our priority to ensure businesses can function effectively and there’s access for those with reduced mobility.

How can I have my say?

To begin the design process, we want to hear how you use Earl Street and what you want it to look like. We have been working with key stakeholders and businesses to understand their needs, and we now want to hear the priorities of the wider community.

What happens after this engagement period?

We will use the information provided to create proposals for Earl Street. We will present these designs to you and ask for further feedback in autumn 2026.

Will I still be able to access disabled parking bays and taxi drop-off?

Yes. We are engaging with businesses and key stakeholders to make sure we continue to provide access to drop-off space and disabled parking, and the design team will consider alternative locations for these where necessary.

I am a local business. Will I still be able to make and receive deliveries?

Yes. We know food deliveries and loading for the Hazlitt Theatre and other businesses are essential for Earl Street to thrive. We are engaging with local businesses from the outset to make sure any changes cater for their needs for loading, deliveries and parking. This includes site visits and surveys with local businesses to understand their needs, and briefings and regular engagement with key stakeholders like One Maidstone and Hazlitt Theatre.
