In 2019 Maidstone Borough Council declared a climate emergency and pledged to achieve as close to carbon neutral as possible by 2030. At a borough wide-scale, in accordance with national government targets, we have set out carbon reduction milestones to reach near to Net-Zero by 2041.
In June of this year, our revised Biodiversity and Climate Change Action Plans were agreed by Cabinet and are currently in the process of delivery. The Biodiversity Action Plan aims to deliver on the Nature Recovery Declaration Aims, with a focus on nature recovery and climate resilience (including nature-based solutions for adapting to climate change). The Climate Change Action Plan aims to deliver on the Climate Emergency Declaration and Net Zero aims, with a focus on decarbonisation and local sustainability.
One of the key influences on these new Action Plans were the residents responses from the past Biodiversity & Climate Change survey. We are very interested in the actions you are taking, or are willing to take, to tackle the climate and biodiversity emergencies and the barriers that are currently preventing you from taking these steps.
Ideas - Tell us your ideas about what can be done to help protect the environment and tackle climate change.
What Next
Your feedback will help inform the delivery of our Biodiversity and Climate Change strategy and explore ways in which we can support and engage with residents.

Did you know...?
Rising temperatures mean that our polar ice caps melt more quickly than before. We are currently losing about 1.2 trillion tons of ice every year! As the ice caps melt into the ocean, the sea level rises. This could cause many low-lying cities to disappear over the next few decades, with some small islands, such as Fiji in the Pacific and the Maldives in the Indian Ocean, at risk of disappearing by the end of the current century.
