The Council is excited to announce the start of a new project to create a Heritage Strategy for the borough and everyone is invited to get involved.

This will provide an opportunity for organisations, individuals and the Council to work together to highlight what is valued, encourage participation in heritage and promote the huge wealth of heritage that exists in the Borough which is often hidden.

Heritage provides us with a sense of place and links to the past. Heritage is not just physical buildings, but can include anything from museum collections, public art, parks and historic gardens to archaeology and cultural activities, events and festivals.

The aim of the strategy will be to create a shared vision about the borough’s heritage, drawing on the thoughts of organisations, businesses and the people of Maidstone. It will also be used to help support future project funding bids.

Heritage in Maidstone

To inform the content of the new Heritage Strategy we are seeking your views on the heritage in the borough and is importance to you.

Help us by completing our short survey.

  • Survey Closes: 28 November 2024.
  • Survey takes: 3-8 minutes to complete.

Heritage Art Competition

If you are aged 18 or under and live or go to school/college in the Borough area then we also want to know what heritage you most value.

Draw or paint a picture of your favourite Borough heritage; it might be a building, a place or an event…or something else. How about the Maidstone Mela or Allington Castle or even East Farleigh Bridge? It is entirely up to you what heritage in the area you want to capture in art.

There are two prizes up for grabs:

  • Best artwork ages 11 and under.
  • Best artwork ages 12 to 18.

The best bit…the prize! The winners will see their artwork incorporated into the final Heritage Strategy and will each win a £25 voucher.

Competition closes: 28 November 2024.

Your feedback will used to shape and inform the new Heritage Strategy.

Formal consultation on a draft Heritage Strategy will take place in Summer 2025 before the final Heritage Strategy is considered by Cabinet in Winter 2025.

  • Heritage Art Competition

    Winners will be informed by email by 6 December 2024. 

    Competition Rules

    • Be aged 18 or under living or at school/college in the Borough area.
    • Upload a photograph of your drawing or painting.
    • Tell us what heritage asset you have drawn or painted and where it is.
    • Don’t forget to send your name, school/college name, your age and also your parent/guardians contact email and telephone number with your entry.
