View of M20 during Operation Brock

Cllr David Burton, Leader of Maidstone Borough Council:

“The implementation of Operation Brock causes significant disruption to residents and businesses of Maidstone. We know that it is needed as part of the current plan to manage the volume of both freight and tourist traffic using the Port of Dover and Eurotunnel when queues build up. This can occur for a variety of reasons. The number of occasions when Op Brock is in place and the impact for our community, businesses and people travelling to and around the borough are unacceptable. This situation cannot be allowed to continue.

We need your help to build the case for change. So we want to hear from you about the impacts that you experience when Op Brock is in place – for your personal lives and working lives – so that we can build a picture of environmental, social and economic impacts.

Operation Brock is not a long term or permanent solution for the border control issues. We cannot tolerate this becoming the “new normal”.

So we also need to look at alterative solutions. We would also like to hear your views on this.

My personal view is that there needs to be sufficient off road lorry parking in the vicinity of the ports and this would help manage some occasions with high freight and tourist traffic queues. I know that others suggest a scheme to hold vehicles further up country and I will not rule this out although there would be operational challenges to how this would work and be enforced. Technology has enabled us to work productively throughout the pandemic in many walks of life – technology could also offers solutions to these challenges.

We want Maidstone to be a Borough that works for everyone, with residents and local businesses at the heart of our decision making and would really like to hear from you about how this disruption has impacted on your lives and ideas for alternative ways forward, so that I can take this evidence to Government to demand action to prevent this from going on forever."

I lived in Deal from 1974- 2001and in Dover, where I was born and raised, before that

I am less affected these days by the road disruptions than I was prior to 2017-2019, when I lost my parents (who would have ever expected one's parents both dying to be referred to as a positive thing!!) BUT during the years when I worked in Ashford and then later while my Mum and Dad (in their late 80s) both ill it often took me twice as long as it should have done to get down to see and care for them. There... Continue reading

    Op brok

by Alice Leach, over 2 years ago

I'm a single parent and live in maidstone, all my work is either ashford or new romney way .. operation brok impedes my daily life as I never know how the mortorway is, if there is an accident in op broc, it can take me hours more time to travel, I have to leave at least 30 mins earlier than usual as the speed limit means there is extra time added to my travel in both directions , I don't see lorries stacked that often and it makes me upset that my daily life is currently made more difficult for... Brock is when the A20 becomes the M20

by Harrietsham resident, over 2 years ago
It's a nightmare! I live 250 yards from it. The noise is horrendous! Trying to get around the local area is a nightmare and the M20 is out of action. Everyone tries to use the back roads causing extended journeys of 2 or 3 times as long as we would usually expect. The chaos is felt throughout the villages east of Maidstone and the North and Easy Kent Coasts. Queues at petrol stations are also horrific. How soon before our house prices fall? Staying home is often the best option!

    Working From Home

by The123, over 2 years ago
My husband started a new job working from home, 3 weeks ago, as Operation Brock was taking a toll on him, driving back daily from Surrey. It would routinely take 4 hours on the return journey but only 1.5 hrs in the morning. Coming back from Portsmouth one time, it took him 6 hours to get home, because of an accident in the contraflow. It could sometimes be quicker to come off the M25 and drive home by A and B roads, instead of using M25-M26-M20. I would use Traffic England and call him morning and evening with updates. We... Horrendous over population and consistent traffic problems

by Mark Newman, over 2 years ago
My life generally is effected by the constant traffic issues we face on seemingly a daily basis living in Lenham on the A20 corridor.

Op Brock and Stack before it cause complete mayhem and misery in my areA. The back roads become flooded with cars trying to avoid the delays and many of these get blocked by larger vehicles trying to escape from the jams.
We have suffered along this stretch of road for the last three years due to the continued and highly impactive multiple building projects that also cause severe delays due to road closures and utility installations... Continue reading

    CHAOS ALL ROUND

by EKMX, over 2 years ago
I have friends out at Kingswood but trying to visit them is so difficult with the congestion on the A20. My brother lives in Folkestone and trying to visit him is a nightmare. Why is there a 50mph speed limit on the M20 when the single carriageway A20 is 60mph? Increase the M20 to 60mph please so cars are not pushed along by the lorries.

Operation Brock causes no end to traffic problems around Maidstone and surrounding villages Leeds, Hollingbourne, Harrietsham and Lenham. The A20 becomes chockablock with so much extra traffic including huge articulated lorries that would normally only travel on motorways. This has caused me to be late several times to work in Charing. We need a proper lorry park with facilities. Manston Airport has frequently been suggested.

Have to divert to visit family

by GarJac, over 2 years ago

Our son and family live in Ashford so to visit when operation brock is in place we go via Headcorn as to join the M20 we would have to go to the Maidstone junction as junction 8 where we would normally join living as we do near Leeds Castle, is closed. The A20 is so busy with traffic avoiding Brock we don’t bother trying to use it.

Don't want to leave the house when Operation Brock is on!

by Jolangridge, over 2 years ago

When Operation Brock is on it disrupts every journey from where I live in Lenham, just off of the A20 because of all the extra traffic flowing this way. Even the back country lanes are busy with people trying to avoid the A20. It basically leaves me feeling confined to my home. It must be affecting local businesses if people don't want to go out. In my opinion, Operation Brock has been implemented for much longer periods than necessary and simply shouldn't exist in the first place. Is there anywhere else in the world that use their motorway as a... Continue reading
