View of M20 during Operation Brock

Cllr David Burton, Leader of Maidstone Borough Council:

“The implementation of Operation Brock causes significant disruption to residents and businesses of Maidstone. We know that it is needed as part of the current plan to manage the volume of both freight and tourist traffic using the Port of Dover and Eurotunnel when queues build up. This can occur for a variety of reasons. The number of occasions when Op Brock is in place and the impact for our community, businesses and people travelling to and around the borough are unacceptable. This situation cannot be allowed to continue.

We need your help to build the case for change. So we want to hear from you about the impacts that you experience when Op Brock is in place – for your personal lives and working lives – so that we can build a picture of environmental, social and economic impacts.

Operation Brock is not a long term or permanent solution for the border control issues. We cannot tolerate this becoming the “new normal”.

So we also need to look at alterative solutions. We would also like to hear your views on this.

My personal view is that there needs to be sufficient off road lorry parking in the vicinity of the ports and this would help manage some occasions with high freight and tourist traffic queues. I know that others suggest a scheme to hold vehicles further up country and I will not rule this out although there would be operational challenges to how this would work and be enforced. Technology has enabled us to work productively throughout the pandemic in many walks of life – technology could also offers solutions to these challenges.

We want Maidstone to be a Borough that works for everyone, with residents and local businesses at the heart of our decision making and would really like to hear from you about how this disruption has impacted on your lives and ideas for alternative ways forward, so that I can take this evidence to Government to demand action to prevent this from going on forever."

    A LIVING HELL

by Michael , almost 2 years ago

I live in Lenham and have daily carer responsibilities for my elderly parents aged 92 (living with cancer and macular degeneration) and aged 82 (living with dementia) who live in Hythe. I care for them to try in a small way to unburden the faltering care sector as much as I can.

I frequently have hospital appointments to get them to in Dover, Folkestone, Canterbury and Ashford, in short all over the County to ease the burden on the NHS by using the increasing number of pop up portable cabins in hospital car parks.

Now one of the two candidates... Continue reading

Try to get home to Harrietsham when operation brock is on is a nightmare!

I seem to remember some talk of using manston airport as a lorry park but this has not happened ! It would be better for the lorry drivers as they could have access to facilities
and it would clear the a 20 for all of us !

    Constant traffic,noise, fumes and accidents

by DK, almost 2 years ago
I live just off the A20 at Lenham, cliose to a crossroads junction which is a historical accident blackspot. whenever there is traffic restrictions or closure village life becomes hell.

Constant traffic with lorries all night long, creating noise (sleep disturbance) and air pollution as well as making it near impossible to walk across the road or exit onto the A20 by car without a very long wait Near misses are frequent as people become impatient to get across the road or out of the junction, sadly accidents increase. Lenham already has significant numbers of new build housing adding to... Continue reading

    Unacceptable impact on local roads

by Val Springett, almost 2 years ago
When Op Brock is installed, and the M20 is shut at Juntion 7 or 8, a huge volume of m20 traffic routes through the village of Bearsted. This causes safety issues and noise disturbance throughout the night as traffic routes through the narrow village streets. Some properties are right on the road without even a pavement between them and the road and properties are 'shaken' when traffic roars by

    Not our problem

by Ian S, almost 2 years ago
Operation Brock heavily penalises and effects the people of Maidstone and Ashford for a port town problem which is in Folkestone and Dover so that’s where the lorries need to be stacked in off road lorry parks I.e just outside the two coastal towns and therefore NOT affecting towns 30 miles inland. Simple.

    Complete and utter nightmare

by Hollingbourne resident, almost 2 years ago

Complete nightmare. Total gridlock on all local roads. Roundabout blocked so residents cannot exit Hollingbourne. Historic buildings and resident's safety at risk due to irate drivers caught up in the diversions, mounting pavements and speeding through the village during the times it is not gridlocked! Litter levels (including human waste) are off the scale due to waiting traffic on M20, A20 and local roads. Huge HGVs getting diverted/lost and ending up on the B and C roads. Unacceptable impact on the lives of local residents.

    DANGEROUS

by Sarah T, almost 2 years ago

Operation Brock is inhumane. Miles of drivers stuck in appalling conditions. It's dangerous to life, the contraflows are narrow and leave little room for manoeuvre. Too many unnecessary accidents. Many aren't dealt with quickly enough. For example Saturday 30/8 a lorry took out a car on the Hollingbourne Fly over. Happened around 8.30 am but still by 10 the road was closed. Both vehicles were easily moved and individuals unharmed why was it left? When you consider Brock was already in action and a contribution to the lorry heading off a major road it unbelievable that there isn't a quicker... Continue reading

GRID LOCK, LOSS OF QUALITY OF LIFE, POLLUTION AND IMPACT OF OUR VILLAGE

by Sarah T, almost 2 years ago
The constant knock on effect of Brock is devastating our rural life. Our country lanes are constantly full of vehicles hoping to avoid the gridlock (who can blame them) and lorries that block and damage highways. We are repeatedly experiencing damage to buildings, vehicles driving dangerously, volume of traffic on roads that were never designed to take this volume in a heritage site that the council should protect for future generations. It seems MBC are blind to what is happening, or have no tools in the box to deal with it.. yet make matters worse by constant development.. we have... Continue reading

When Brock comes in, and it does too frequently, I stop traveling south out of Maidstone towards the coast.

The hassle and impact upon the whole of Kent is appalling. Yert year-on-year nothing is done.

Complacency and lack of vision prevail.

Disaster repeated like a bad dream.

    M20 road from hell

by KG, almost 2 years ago
I used the M20 everyday as a frontline worker travelling to Folkstone. Brock has made my life a misery.

The fact that the m20 has been down to 2 lanes for the whole of the summer has put to much pressure on the local areas to hold heavy traffic.

The A20 divert is single lane and extremely slow and the m2 division adds an hour to a 30 minute journey.

To keep Brock in operation “just in case” is pure laziness on the part of the highways agency who seem not to answer to anyone, even MP’s . They also... Continue reading
