View of M20 during Operation Brock

Cllr David Burton, Leader of Maidstone Borough Council:

“The implementation of Operation Brock causes significant disruption to residents and businesses of Maidstone. We know that it is needed as part of the current plan to manage the volume of both freight and tourist traffic using the Port of Dover and Eurotunnel when queues build up. This can occur for a variety of reasons. The number of occasions when Op Brock is in place and the impact for our community, businesses and people travelling to and around the borough are unacceptable. This situation cannot be allowed to continue.

We need your help to build the case for change. So we want to hear from you about the impacts that you experience when Op Brock is in place – for your personal lives and working lives – so that we can build a picture of environmental, social and economic impacts.

Operation Brock is not a long term or permanent solution for the border control issues. We cannot tolerate this becoming the “new normal”.

So we also need to look at alterative solutions. We would also like to hear your views on this.

My personal view is that there needs to be sufficient off road lorry parking in the vicinity of the ports and this would help manage some occasions with high freight and tourist traffic queues. I know that others suggest a scheme to hold vehicles further up country and I will not rule this out although there would be operational challenges to how this would work and be enforced. Technology has enabled us to work productively throughout the pandemic in many walks of life – technology could also offers solutions to these challenges.

We want Maidstone to be a Borough that works for everyone, with residents and local businesses at the heart of our decision making and would really like to hear from you about how this disruption has impacted on your lives and ideas for alternative ways forward, so that I can take this evidence to Government to demand action to prevent this from going on forever."

    Negative impact

I live in a village that connects to the A20. As soon as the M20 gets restrictions, I may as well forget about driving anywhere. My normal 15 to 20 minute drive is turned into a 40 to 90 minute drive due to the shear volume of traffic attempting to dodge the restrictions. My birthday party was also ruined this year as people were stuck in traffic for up to 3 hours trying to attend and then gave up and went home. The impact on local businesses is massive and I have lost clients due to concerns on travel to... Continue reading

Congestion in Maidstone is a general problem and for me using the A20 towards willington street it is particularly bad on a day to day basis. Add the fact the a huge section of motorway from J8 to J9 is regularly shut adds more traffic to already congested roads.

Although retired and I can chose when and what times I travel, when Operation Brock is in place, I avoid using the M20 and other nearby A roads like the plague! This means I do not visit the towns and villages accessed by these roads with a consequent loss of business to them. Operation Brock must be causing a severe economic downturn to all the small businesses in those areas by people like me. Additionally when I have been forced by circumstances to use the M20 I have noticed that the signage for the services at junction 8 of the... Continue reading

Operation block / stack has been going on for far too many years now. Why are we still using the motorway to try solve the issue? It's a major road to keeping Kent moving

We live in Lenham just off the A20. Brock causes queues of traffic down the A20, increasing journey times and making it very difficult to pull out of our local roads onto the A20.

One morning it took me an hour to get to work in Maidstone town, 45 mins of that was just to get from Lenham to the Leeds castle roundabout

    Please stop the... Continue reading

Event attendance becomes a trial on how to get there as the A20 alternative route doubles in its use and adds extra fuel costs in relation to continuous speed adherence and therefore extra omissions.Op Brock deters visits to the coast during school holidays as A2 also affected so coastal business suffers and our freedom to go anywhere beyond junction 8 M20 is curtailed.Local roads even more frequently now congested and requiring repair.Noise pollution is increased in urban and rural areas.

by Hollingbourne resident, over 2 years ago
I live in Hollingbourne near junction 8 of the motorway, when there is an accident on the motorway from junction 8 to 9 all the traffic has to go on the A20 single lane each way road, due to this we cannot get out of Hollingbourne, after a covid vaccine I had a problem with my heart very fast heart beat, needed to get to my doctors in Lenham, when I tried to drive there the road was at standstill both ways, it was a Friday I had to get to the doctors to get medication, as it was 5.15... The contraflow is dangerous. Not needed and it wont be long until a serious accident happens. HGV ignore the 6’6” in lane 2 all the time. Constant tailgating because of the 50mph.

Travelling between Ashford and Maidstone everyday just infuriates me. Brock should not be used like this (brock implemented just in case it gets busy because it is the holiday period) All the HGV drivers now know that A20 bypasses Brock. What a great idea….. Kent Resilience Forum isnt working in our best interests and are unfit for purpose.

    No to Operation Brock.

by Anne B, over 2 years ago

I live in Penenden Heath and work in Headcorn and it never ceases to amaze me the affect of Operation Brock has had on my journey to and fro work over the past years, I feel a lorry Park for the poor drivers is long over due. Whist it is a pain for me and a nuisance, it must be horrendousfor the drivers without proper facilties, i dread to think what they leave on the carriageway.

I believe this situation has gone on for far too long .

I live at J10 and work at J5.

Traffic and speed restrictions means by journey time 5x a week has nearly doubled. Whenever there is a broken down vehicle or extra traffic or crash, I can be stuck for ages with no reprieve. Taking the A20 is slower and now even worse as well now there ate constant roadworks.

We live near junction 7 of the M20. When Brocknis in place large volumes of traffic use New Cut Road to join/leave the M20. This causes gridlock, noise, pollution and makes getting anywhere a nightmare.

    Worse still, it is 24/7.
